Snips, Snails & Puppy Dog Tails

This family has a new addition since I last saw them- Zip is three months old and filled with the orneriness and energy of a puppy! Between himself and his “brothers”, there was a lot of bouncing and jumping around (Zip was partially on my back for one of these photos and I had an adorable little boy hugging my leg during another; even the older dog who isn’t well right now was shaking around a big ball in the backyard with his tail wagging).

One (human) brother had asked me for a piggy-back ride and he had the sweetest little voice squeak out, “pleeeeeeeease??”. And when it was time to go outside, one of the boys asked, “Amy, are you coming with us?”. While I do think little boys are made of snips, snails & puppy dog tails, there’s certainly a few tablespoons of sugar that really sweetens them up!

Passage of Time

…my last share from the archives for awhile! A couple of these were photographed a few years ago for a botanical photography class at the Franklin Park Conservatory (taught by Julia McLemore with Joyce Tenneson visiting as a guest speaker/teacher). The orchid bloom and buds were the remnants of a gift given to Ryan and I when we first moved into the studio.

Leaf and Shadow

…more images dug up from the past. I’ll miss our local Metroparks as well as the Franklin Park Conservatory.

Highway Patrol

All the World’s a Stage PTII (the player)

…just a follow-up to a previous post– more experimentation after sundown! I’m preparing to take this series of work even further at the AfterDark event next month in Charlotte, NC. There’s a pond just outside of the hotel…hope you can make it out to play!

Granville Senior

This senior guy was super easy to photograph; the camera absolutely loved him! There are only a handful of people who can really pull off that serious-yet-smiling look, and N is one the few. Not only that, but he actually invented a new “pose” that I fully plan to use again for senior guys: I’m calling it “the knuckle cruncher”!

In all seriousness, N was awesome to work with, as were his parents and a friend who graciously couch-sat for me to keep people from taking the sofa I left out by the curb. (This happened after I had to peek my head out the door to tell an interested party that it was just a photo prop waiting to be used…he had jumped out of his car to inspect it while his wife remained parked at the corner stop light.) It seems there’s always some sort of an adventure going on…here’s hoping N’s senior year is filled with many more!

Breathe

After working a full day at the studio yesterday and coming right back in first thing this morning to stay, again, through evening, I’m feeling a little pre-homesick today (if you’re not sure why, read this post). I walked down the block for a scone and coffee at Northstar (oh how I’ll miss my Northstar!), and ended up getting teary-eyed while waiting in line. Some sort of an event was going on with joggers/walkers dispersing onto the sidewalks, a live band played from a parking lot and the usual Saturday morning buzz of the Short North pulsed through the streets. While I know I’m a rural girl at heart, I’m sure going to miss the city. Thank goodness Nashville has a couple of Jeni’s shops now!! (plus I already searched to be sure there’s an Anthropologie store not too far away)

Anyway, to try and lift my spirits a bit, I pulled some of these images I’ve taken over the past several years as a reminder that “the quiet life” can be just as nice as urban living (working). I do really look forward to having the space to simply breathe.

Short North Senior

It’s so strange to think that it was almost three years ago that I photographed N’s sister for her high school senior portraits. Ryan and I had just gotten the studio and hers was one of the first sessions to be held there. Now, this time around, N. was also photographed in and around our space, one of the last handful of sessions to be photographed in the very same place. While I often feel like I get to watch my clients’ families grow, this is one instance where the tables are turned!

N, best of luck for your senior year!!!

Summer Nights

We squeezed every ounce of daylight we could out of this family/post-senior portrait session. The start of our evening was sunny and hot, but by 8:30 the sky was already darkened; a reminder that autumn is less than a month away. With the change of season, these two parents will officially be empty-nesters. L. leaves today to head back to college and N. begins his freshman year next month.

I feel so very blessed to be invited to document such important moments in a family’s life!

At the Reservoir PT II

As promised, here’s the follow-up to a recent blog post; this time combining both video and still photography captured during our Allegro portrait session at the reservoir:

You caught such great expressions and moments. This family will cherish these for a lifetime. Well done!
