This idea has been brewing since the last After Dark event in Charlotte and I’m so excited that we’ve started finalizing plans for the next event in Kansas City! Brooke Shaden, Dan Frievalt and I are teaming up to offer a class about photographing above, in and under the water. If you’re a photographer and not familiar with these other names, you really must to check them out!

Brooke is a fine art and conceptual photographer based out of LA. Her work includes just about any twist you could imagine within the photographic medium (digital compositions, props, powders,…water of course!). To describe her work as inspiring is a complete disservice, but the best I’ve got at the moment. The image you see above was taken during her underwater class led at a previous After Dark event. She’ll continue to share her tips on photographing underwater and she (as well as Dan and I) will be taking this course a little further to let you catch a deeper glimpse into the minds of the artists.
Dan’s mind is one that I’d love to explore further. He and I teamed up at the past two AD events to photograph seniors each in our own style. I feel like he’s the yin to my yang and each time I learn/see something from him that I’d never expected. Right now he’s trying some new water techniques in his own work and I feel like this class could offer a front row seat into his psyche (so cool!).
As for me, I’ve been known to wade chest-deep into lakes, creeks and rivers to capture unique angles in my work. Now that I have my own natural water source right here on my property, I’ve been experimenting even more. I’ll be sharing my bag full of tips that I’ve learned along the way on how to incorporate this mysterious element without having to submerge your camera.
I hope you can come out and join us this September in Kansas City. Click this link and use discount code “APP” and save some money when you register. Hope to see you!
